11th Annual Rock Bass Tournament 2011
By Barb Holland

The rain was threatening at times, but it held off as 15 kids plus parents showed up at the Government dock at 5 pm on August 13 for the 11th Annual Rock Bass Fishing Tournament. Four teams caught a total of 52 lbs of rock bass. Thanks and congratulations to all! Ridding the lake of rock bass helps improve fishing for small mouth bass and trout. Many have commented that fishing has continued to improve over the last few years.

1st Place: The Pickett Plus Team of Alex, Daniel and Jonath Pickett plus friend Jordan Mundier caught 30 lbs of fish (total weight). 2nd Place: Aidan & Rowan Fry and Cole Garner snagged 8.5 lbs (total weight).
3rd Place: The all girl team of Madison and Mackenzie Walsh hooked 5.4 lbs (total weight). Team #4: The largest team this year had six members: Jacob, Jack, Owen and Raelyn Jamieson, Jordain Jolicoeur and Ryley Malcolm. They caught a total of 8.4 lbs.
Once again, medals were presented to all the fishers. We thank everyone for participating and hope you had fun. This year, Steve Pape (recently retired and an avid fisherman!) weighed all the fish for us; I recorded and divided the weight of each team's haul by the number in the team (to be fair to all). Donna and Mike Palmer captured the event digitally. Thank you to all the participants, the patient parents, grandparents and friends who hooked worms all day long.

A few notes:
● Rock Bass are a ‘less than desirable’ fish, eating food and plankton that everyone would prefer small mouth bass and lake trout nibble. That’s why KLA (and other lakes) host a rock bass tournament to get rid of these fish (as well as have fun for the kids).
● The only rule, other than to have fun of course, is to fish only on the day of the tournament.
● We also ask that you are courteous and respectful of cottagers’ property and docks. Do not tie up to a dock unless you ask and receive permission.

No stockpiling permitted! See you next year – for the Great Weigh-In!
Please note an earlier time to meet at the Gov’t Dock @ 4:00 pm.
Date is August 11, 2012.
